Amongst the many emails that I receive from folks organizing, or planning to organize, an essay contest is the question of whom to hire to handle the legal aspects. What I do recommend is that potential essay contest organizers DO HIRE an attorney that can help them steer clear of the pitfalls that can place them on the wrong side of a state's lottery statutes, as well as assist in other legal aspects, including the transfer of ownership of the prize if the contest is successful. These folks are not necessarily experts on essay contests - they may not have actually ever worked on one. However, they have expressed a willingness to work with you in planning the legal aspects of your contest.
